Tragedy + Comedy = Timing | An SEO Experiment

I did a search yesterday to see if I could find the attendees for this year’s Republican National Convention. This year has been awful, so much death, and so much scapegoating and cowardice from the people who led us here. I didn’t want to watch the convention. I just wanted to know who was going. I can’t imagine that many celebrities or anyone really wants to go.

But I couldn’t find anything about it. My main search was “The Full List of Speakers for the 2020 Republican National Convention,” and then related derivations and simplifications. And I couldn’t find a thing about it. At all.

So, I checked google search console out of curiosity, and saw that there was a bump in people doing the search I’d done. Like, the exact search term I did was the highest trafficked version of that search based on 10 minutes of research. I could do a deeper search to see what I could find. But I realized there might be a fun opportunity here.

I started writing my attendees list. The first three were semi-serious, “Jon Voigt, Scott Baio, Kid Rock.” I couldn’t remember the name of Mike Lindell when I was typing, so I wrote down, “The My Pillow Guy.” And it made me laugh. There was a pattern of 3, which all of my comedy adventures at Upright Citizens Brigade and Magnet Theater (what’s up Gary from HR?) told me was a good pattern. Rules of 3 feel complete, a beginning, middle and end. So, it follows that, “The Demon Sperm Doctor, The MAGA Hat Kid,” should be next. And I had my own potential buzzfeed-style listicle I could make.

So I kept going. I went low-tech, just a quick publish on Medium.com, with a graphic I grabbed from the official RNC website. It’ll go up tomorrow, and I’m curious what’s going to happen with it. I think some portion of the traffic will go to me. I spent maybe 30 minutes all in on this, and it’s the best I’ve felt all summer.

–edit 2020.08.20 – and you can now read The Full List of Speakers for the 2020 Republican National Convention on medium.com!
