On Prince Rogers Nelson for Listen and Culture

Prince died on April 21, 2016 from a fentyl overdose, and it’s stupid and awful. This year is looking more and more like it’s going to be a stupid and awful year.

I sometimes wondered as a kid what it would be like to live when Mozart was alive. To be around when his oeuvre was being written in real time. Since Prince died, I realized that I know exactly what that was like. He was a bonafide a genius, and we got to listen to all of his great works get created. And centuries after we’re gone, people will still be listening to and playing his music.

Ben Finane, editor-in-chief at Listen and Culture asked me to write a piece about Prince and his work. I’m grateful to get to share some musichead thoughts on someone great, a kind of ekphrastic expression not about a singular work of art, but a singular work of artist.

edit 2016.06.30 – check out the piece I wrote for Listen and Culture on their websiteSign O’ the Times – Remembering Prince.
