Fundamentals of Product Creation 4 – Backlogs & Roadmaps

Format
workshop
Runtime range
~2.5–3 hrs as a module

Part of the Product Development Fundamentals workshop series (19 independent workshops across 6 modules; 5–20 participants). Each sub-item below is deliverable standalone or as this full module. Modules 2, 3, 4, and 6 include hands-on exercises.

4a. Vision & Roadmaps (45–60 min · hands-on)

A roadmap without a vision is just a to-do list. Covers how to write a product vision statement using the Vision Statement Constructor, how to build an internal positioning statement, and how Crunchyroll’s vision (“champion the art and culture of Anime”) shaped its roadmap decisions. Includes a group exercise writing a vision statement.

4b. Backlog Management (45–60 min · hands-on)

The backlog is where product strategy becomes daily work. Covers the Product Owner role, prioritization, saying no, and velocity. Includes the Bookmarks grooming exercise with Trello (25–45 min): story breakdown, prioritization, business value.

4c. User Stories (20–30 min)

User stories are the currency of Agile product development. Covers the standard format (“As a [user], I want [goal] so that [reason]”), acceptance criteria, and what makes a story good vs. vague.

4d. Sprints (35–45 min)

A sprint is a time-boxed cycle of planning, building, and reviewing. Covers sprint ceremonies — planning, daily standups, sprint reviews, and retrospectives — plus velocity, with Kanban included as an alternative methodology for contrast.
